Unit 2 Draft

The rise in technology has impacted many industries, as well as the daily lives of individuals. Some argue that this rise has negatively impacted their lives, while others believe the complete opposite. One industry that has been majorly impacted by the rise in technological innovations is the advertising industry. What was once known for incredible magazine pages or billboards on the streets, has been transformed to what catches peoples’ eyes when going onto the Internet. Most specifically, the rise of social media has impacted the advertising industry, and while some may believe that advertising hit its peak and won’t get back to it again, advertising on social media has opened many new doors for the industry.  Social media is used at obscene rates by people in the United States. In a survey conducted by MDG Advertising, it was found that 30% of the time that Americans spend online in a week, they are on social networks. This statistic is astonishing as this was the largest ...

Unit 2 Library

Image
I decided to take out Diet Pepsi from the library. Although this isn't a book or reading material that most people would take out of a library, I felt as if Diet Pepsi was still something very useful to take out. Teenagers are reliant on caffeine while they do their work or study, and having Diet Pepsi, a soda filled with caffeine, readily available in the library for students is very useful. I personally love going to the library in my town to get books. I have had a library card since I was very young, and I don't plan on having it expire any time soon. Personally, I love how the library is a relatively free source of books because having to spend upwards of $10 on each book I would want to buy is a little barbaric knowing I'm only going to read the book once. I work as a Lifeguard over the summer, so during my breaks I love to read leisurely, mainly because the books weren't assigned to me. I go to the library and choose the books I want to read because eve...

Abstract/Pitch

Image
I posted the above picture on my Instagram account in order to reach a wide audience of people that use social media. I used my Instagram account to pitch my question because I knew that my respondents would be able to give their exact opinions without being limited with a yes or no response through commenting. All of the responses I received were pretty expected because advertising as an industry really has grown and changed due to technology such as social media. I am planning on arguing that the changes in the advertising industry have been a positive change for the future. However, I will have to research the opposing side of this argument because I know many people are skeptical about what these new innovations will do to advertising. I believe that there will always be advertising, it may just be different than how we currently know it.

Unit 1 Portfolio

Overarching Question for Topic 1: How does technology impact my daily life in the industries I learn about and take part in? Source 1 In  From Pencils to Pixels  by Dennis Baron, the author addresses the shift in writing technology from as early as written speech to today and the future with the computer. Additionally, the author speaks about the backlash that occurs from people once a new form of technology is accepted. This was done to show that people aren’t only against the shift to a more digital form of writing as people were not content with the invention of the telephone. When describing this Baron states, “Morse refused Bell’s offer to sell him the rights to the telephone patent. He was convinced that no one would want the telephone because it was unable to provide any permanent record of a conversation,” (Baron).  Furthermore, Baron spoke of “stages” of how literacy technologies go to the public. It starts with only being available to a small number...

Free Writes Unit 1

Image
This free write was meaningful to me because I have a passion in being a leader. From a very young age I was taught not to be a follower and what it meant to be a leader. Additionally, I have always been told that I have leadership qualities that I should always remember when going through life. I have always been the one to take on leadership roles whether in school or on sport teams I have taken part in. I think this is something that I am good at and take pride in. Not many people are able to recognize themselves as being a leader, but I am proud to know that I am good at being a leader and not following the rest of the crowd.
